Community Water Fluoridation Information & Updates

How do I know if my home has fluoridated water or if my child needs a fluoride prescription?

  • Visit the Pinellas County Utilities website or check the map to view what areas have fluoridated water and what areas do not. **If you pay your water bill to Pinellas County Utilities, the addition of fluoride to your water will be discontinued effective Decemeber 31, 2011.** If your home is in an area which will not have fluoridated water, your child will most likely need a fluoride prescription.
  • Please fill out the Fluoride Analysis Questionnaire and either mail, fax, or email it to our office in advance so we can have a plan of supplementation ready for you at your child’s next visit. This form will help the doctor assess your child’s need for fluoride supplements. One questionnaire will need to be completed for each patient as supplements vary according to the child's age.
  • If you have a reverse osmosis system or whole house carbon water filter in your home, you will need to test your water for fluoride. Most of these systems will remove the fluoride from your water even if you live in an area with fluoridated community water. You will want to check your water with a fluoride testing kit.

  • If you are unsure as to whether or not you have fluoride in your water,or need your water tested as above, you can pick up a testing kit from our office.

A Word From Dr. Johnny:

As many of you have heard, the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners by a vote of 4-3 voted to quit adding fluoride to our county's water supply. This decision was NOT based on science and research of the safety and effectiveness of fluoride. Fluoridation of water has been shown in countless studies over the past 60 years to be safe and effective. The votes which were cast against fluoridation were by Commissioners Brickfield, Bostock, Roche, and Morroni.

Words cannot convey my level of deep disappointment and the lack of trust in sound science that these four Commissioners exhibited. The dental health implications will be far reaching and impact all socio-economic levels of the residents served by our county water system. Tragically, the population that will suffer the greatest will be the people who have benefited the most; families without the resources or access to dental care. It may surprise you that nearly 50% of the US population does not go to the dentist. These folks will suffer the greatest impact of its removal. This decision will lead to increased cavities, pain, loss of school days, and even life-threatening infections.

The impact on you, our family, will be one where you will need to begin using prescription fluoride supplements to replace the fluoride that is being removed from the water supply. To help tailor a fluoride regimen to your family, we have an extensive fluoride questionnaire that every family will need to complete. This form can be downloaded from the link below. Please complete it and either mail, fax, or email it to our office well in advance of your appointment so we can have a plan of supplementation when you arrive at your appointment.

I make this promise to you: I, along with our entire dental community, will work diligently, along with your support, to reverse this decision by County Commissioners Brickfield, Bostock, Roche, and Morroni.
